 Targeting Reading, Children Succeeding

Dear Families of Holy Spirit School,

English Cycles: Class teachers are planning short cycles for English, based on quality literature. These shorter cycles enable the teachers to assess the students and use this data to inform their next cycle of work so that it is targeted at student needs.
The Year 6 classes are finishing a unit based on the text ‘Ride, Ricardo, Ride’. Last week, I was invited to listen to some of the persuasive talks prepared by the students. Students made note of the literary devices, the beautifully detailed illustrations and the powerful message behind the story. I was particularly impressed by the high quality of presentation skills, such as using a clear voice, eye contact and gesture. The children used their iPads effectively throughout the speech process, to record their talks, give feedback and identify areas for improvement. Well done, students and teachers!

Prep: We are seeing the Preps gain confidence in their writing and showing more independence in creating their own sentences.
Year 2: Amazing pieces of descriptive writing are coming out of Year 2 as part of the English cycle based around the mentor text of ‘Magic Beach’.
